“By giving yourself to God, you not only receive Himself in exchange, but eternal life as well”
- St. Francis de Sales
January 24th is the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, the Patron Saint of Writers and Journalists, of Christian Unity, and of the Deaf. Francis used flyers and books to guide people spiritually and to convert Calvinists. For this reason, the Feast of St. Francis de Sales usually marks the release of the Pope’s annual message for the World Communication Day.
Francis is known and admired for his clear understanding of the longings of the human heart. His spirituality is a ‘Spirituality of the Heart’. He shared his insights with people from all walks of life on navigating through the daily worries and anxieties of life in order to make progress in our spiritual journey. This great Master of Spirituality taught that our nostalgia for God, inscribed in the depths of our hearts, find true joy and complete fulfillment only in Him. The goal of our spiritual journey is to belong to Him and Him alone.
Francis offers profound counsels for anyone who lives in the midst of the world and wants to pursue a life of holiness. Spiritual wisdom of St. Francis de Sales makes it clear to us that everything flows from the loving heart of a loving Father. Our response to the love of the Father is a joyful union of our human will with his loving will. We begin our life of communion with God only when we discover that we are loved and accepted by God without any condition.
It is comforting to know what St. Francis de Sales says about our response to God’s unconditional love: “Let us be what we are and be that well, in order to bring honor to the Master Craftsman whose handiwork we are.” – St. Francis de Sales
