The Origin

The origin of our mission in brazil dates from the year 1926. The archbishop of São Paulo brazil, approched Fr Alphonse Favrat, then superior general and invited the congregation to work in his diocese. The superior general consulted Bishop Rossillon. He encouraged fr favrat to accept the missio. Fr Favrat accepted the proposal and sent the first batch of teh msfs, fathers Augert, Gaydon and Birraux to brazil. They arrived at santos the port of São Paulo on 5th december 1926.

The place offered to them was not yet free. So They had to wait fifteen mnths during which They learnded portuguese adn prepared for their mission. When Fr Augert acquired a certain command of the language. He started preaching missions to the ladies. He had a great desire to open a house of teh congregation.

Vocations

In 1953 a juvenate was opened in cacador. The number of juvenists grew to 50 in 1962. Several joined the novitiate , few persevered. Four brazilian from this juvenate were ordained priests. The first msfs brazilian provincial Sillios Scanzerla was one of them. This juvenate was closed in the seventies. A new seminary close to santelmo parish was inagurated in january 1982. Three indian confreres Felix Mendes, Bruno Rodrigues and Hendricks Lindsay from M.G province have been sent to brazil to strengthen the hands of our confreres. Fr Emile mayoraz, our superior general has assigned them the task of encouraging vocations.

At presente

Today our msfs fathers are spread all over the brazil, giving witnessing testamony. From then on each provincial has been doing their best to reorganize the province accroding to the constitution and directory of the congregation. The spirit of mission is in the blood of the province.  Fr Gilberto prepared Around 300 lay missioaries in the parish of tangua. After this death, the mission was stagnant. Fr Thomson gave importance for the retrets local communities, on going formation. After him Fr Jagannathan assumed as provincial, new commitee was formed to prepare the stautes and it as oficialized in the provincial congress after the approval of the superior general.

Fr Jose Devasahayam them assumed as provincial in 2023, he insisted very Much extraordinary missions in the parishes and also came up with new projets of reforming old seminary in caçador. In order to promulgate our salesian mission and vision the province have started a Monthly jornal called “MISSIONAR” means missionaries in action or continuous action of mission.
